The Starr Hill Pathways program, sponsored by The Equity Center at UVA, provides students enrolled in Charlottesville City and Albemarle County Public Schools a unique opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to a wide range of career possibilities, including in data science. The free, year-long program prioritizes students of color, those from low- and middle-income families, and future first-generation college students.

In this insightful video, students explore the correlation between traditional business revenue and the impact of social media versus conventional business models. Students met with the Mavericks staff to learn how the team uses and interprets data to boost their success both on and off the court.

On Saturday, Ben Wallace, four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and core member of the 2004 champion Detroit Pistons, will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Nobody — arguably including Wallace himself — was more thrilled by the honor than a group of six students at Armstrong High School in Richmond, a 10-minute drive from Wallace’s alma mater of Virginia Union University.

The MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, in partnership with Wasserman and in association with the Sports Analytics Club Program (SACP), is focused on increasing diversity in the sports industry, as is the SACP. To amplify that mission, SACP is supporting the MIT Sloan Conference’s new Mentorship Program, presented by Wasserman, by sponsoring eight college students who are alumni of SACP Clubs in 2021 and 2022.

Chauncey Billups, the 2004 NBA Finals MVP for the Detroit Pistons and a five-time NBA All-Star, is highly qualified for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., according to research by the Cass Technical High School Sports Analytics Club in Detroit.

The Cass Tech students, participants in The Sports Analytics Club Program (SACP), analyzed Billups’ statistical profile from his 17-year NBA career and found that the five-time All-Star compared favorably to several other point guards already enshrined in Springfield.

In January 2020, the Quince Orchard High (QOHS) Sports Analytics Club (MD) predicted the NBA stardom of Murray in a data science driven SACP Research Report issued to the Denver Nuggets under the assignment of Tommy Balcetis, assistant general manager of the Nuggets. The Club was governed by STEM Teacher Michael Schweizer and George Mason University Professor Ralph Romanelli served as the University Partner Advisor.

A Data Scientist was the highest paying entry-level job in 2019, with the median base salary of $95,000, in which according to Forbes it also held the lowest percentile of women, African Americans, and Latinos working in the field. To address this disparity, the CEO and Founder of the Sports Analytics Club Program Mr. Robert L. Clayton, Esq. collaboratively developed a partnership with Faculty member Ben Shields at MIT Sloan in 2017 where the Sports Analytics Club Program non-profit was born.

Charles Oakley may not be a name most people remember, but he was once one of the most prominent power forwards in the NBA. A skilled defensive player and prolific rebounder, he was a core member of the New York Knicks throughout the 80s and 90s. Yet, before he was snatching up jump balls at Madison Square Garden, he was sinking baskets at Virginia Union University.

The Baltimore City College (B.C.C.) students, participants in The Sports Analytics Club Program (SACP), analyzed Flood’s Major League Baseball career by applying advanced data science techniques developed in baseball since Flood’s retirement in 1971 after 14 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals. The B.C.C. Sports Analytics Club found that the three-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion and seven-time Gold Glove winner has a unique résumé that sets him apart from other stars of his era.
